A multifunctional packaging solution was developed for Protea Wines to allow the packaging to outlive the product itself. Research showed that many consumers kept their bottles to upcycle them but lacked the tools or knowledge to do so, which led to the creation of the Protea Loadshedding Box. Designed around South Africa’s ongoing loadshedding challenges, the packaging includes modular components and solar-powered LED fairy lights in partnership with Eagle Lighting, enabling the box and bottle to be reused as practical and decorative lighting solutions. The packaging itself is made from recyclable materials and designed to function both together and independently. The concept balances sustainability, usability, and aesthetics while solving a real problem Protea Wines consumers experience, giving purpose to the bottles stored away in their cupboards.
